Rossi To Join Villareal

Today’s news has come as a bit of a shock to a lot of Man Utd fans. Rossi has long been a favourite within the youth team and has been touted as the future of Manchester United even by Sir Alex Ferguson himself so it’s come as a bit of a surprise that the club have decided to sell him.

But, as I pointed out earlier this month in the Glazers Buy Now, Pay Later article, the free spending that has been happening this summer isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and anyone who actually believe that we are spending anywhere near £70m needs to look at the figures more closely.

It therefore appears as though we’re trying to recover some of the cost that has been spent this summer. £6.7m has been mentioned in a few places which, if accurate, certainly represents good business for a player who has yet to play a major part in the Premiership but if he continues his development at the rate he has been then that figure could easily be worth triple that when you consider the amount we’ve just spent on the likes of Nani and Anderson.

Rossi is still only 20 years old and showed at Parma last season that he’s more than capable of performing at the top level so I’m a little surprised that he wasn’t at least given the chance to prove himself especially with the lack of strikers available for selection going into the new season.

Van Nistelrooy was sold and never replaced, Saha cannot be relied upon to stay fit, Smith is probably off to Middlesbrough, Solskjaer has had endless injury problems and won’t be fit for the start of the season and whilst Tevez could be the solution, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight to that saga.

Man Utd have always been a club that basis itself on bringing up young talent and gradually introducing them to the first team by mixing it with experience. Obviously with Sir Alex still at the club the emphasis is still on that aspect but why are we spending millions on the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson and then letting someone with the potential of Rossi go for a third of that figure?
