Wolves 0 United 1

As the season nears its end no game can be considered easy. Wolves have found some decent form of late and deserved something out of their game against Chelsea, and so hopes were not over confident about this game. Especially with no Rooney and no Fletcher, and with others clearly having half an eye on the Milan game. So, on reflection, getting three points was a fantastic result even if the performance was far from convincing.

Wolverhampton is a strange little town, all contained within a small ringroad and with the stadium only a short walk north. We arrived a few hours before kick off and parked literally in the shadow of the ground by the ringroad. We killed some time in the town centre before walking back to the Steve Bull stand. Strangely there was the most enormous police presence with three deep lines of coppers and extra searches taking place.

United had the entire length of the Steve Bull stand stretching down the side of the pitch. I have not watched a game from near the half way line in ages and it was also strange to have fellow Reds so far away on each side of me- as the stand had so few rows 3000 tickets meant the section being aroudn 300 seats long. It was also weird to be so low yet so far away from the pitch- apparently the pitch use to be 90 degrees around, and so the stands at the side are pretty far away from each other.

On the pitch United were pretty woeful. Had we faced a better team we would have lost, and even this pretty average team carved out a few clear cut chances that should have been buried. It was not good to watch and as the second half went on we looked more likely to lose than win. Step forwards the master- Paul Scholes kept cool when all else had crumbled, and he dropped his shoulder twice and smashed home for his 100th league goal and a United win. Queue mayhem in the United end and green and gold scarves galore twirling in the air.

The last few minutes were frantic. I still cannot believe Wolves somehow failed to equalise and I saw the ball hitting the net in my mind before realising it had actually blazed over. PHEW! But at this stage of the season the result is all that matters and we got the points to go top again and pile the pressure back on Chelsea. Great stuff!
