United 1 Sunderland 0

The top Premier League sides are facing more and more defensive teams this season, reminding us all of Mourinho’s comments abour parking buses in front of the goal. United struggled to break down Bolton at home earlier in the season and only took the lead after a dodgy penalty decision, whilst Chelsea and Liverpool have dropped points at home which came as a surprise. Sunderland, with no manager and a week of crisis, would do al they could to cling on for the draw and so it was up to United to find the breakthrough.

Before the game I really did not see this as a worrying game. Sunderland’s defending has been appauling at times this season and I expected us to get an early goal and then push on. When I saw the strong line up with Rooney and Tevez up front I felt confidence we would put on a good display and carve Sunderland apart. As the game went things did not look so good. United dominated the game, created a few chances and were camped in Sunderland’s half, but United just did not have that cutting edge and Sunderland defended bravely and effectively. I don’t blame Sunderland for their negative display, they set their stall out and United should have been more than capable of breaking it down.

As the ground echoed with “There’s only one Keano” time ticked away. Giggs, Anderson and Tevez had freshened up the game a little but still the goal somehow did not come. Carrick’s shot was well saved, and Vidic and Berbatov both missed free headers. The board went up announcing 4 minutes of stoppage time and there was one last roar to try and encourage the team. Just at the moment Carrick let fly, the shot took a defelection and hit the post, coming out to Vidic who stabbed it home. Jubilant scenes, made celebrations, relief all around, and I actually felt sorry for the away team. It was a lucky breakthrough but was totally deserved over ninety minutes.

We have watched Liverpool grind out results like that with late goals all season, and today was our turn. We got the three points which was the only aim of the day but the result won’t be great for confidence ahead of the Spurs game. And that Spurs game will be all the harder considering Rooney and Evra will now be suspended.
