United 5 Stoke 0

I nearly did not make the Stoke game as, after a week of travelling up and down the country and knowing I was going away on Sunday, a day’s rest would have been perfect. However, at the last minute I could not miss out and decided to travel up, and I am so glad I did. This was a great performance, even if the opposition was poor and offered little to the game, and the 5-0 scoreline was not even flattering.

Before kick off the team news contained some surprises- notably the absence of Rooney and Rio. It was an opportunity for Tevez and also a test of Ronaldo who was yet to find full fitness despite still scoring. Three stunning Ronaldo freekicks later- including two that went in, ninety minutes of energy from Tevez and a fantastic volley from Berbatov answered those questions. Michael Carrick was also superb, scoring a wonderful goal but also picking holes in the Stoke defence through the game, and the contribution of Danny Welbeck should not be forgotten. In a week where the media overhyped the abaility of Arsenal’s kids, it was appropriately that a 17 year old local lad made his debut for United and scored the goal of the weekend. Maybe Arsenal should start playing their reserves in the first team?

So a job very well done by United. A great response to poor results against Celtic and Arsenal, and the perfect way to go into the pointless international week before a tricky trip to Villa. Villa Park will be a tough prospect despite our great record there, especially as we are yet to win a ‘big’ game this season and they are in good form having just won at the Emirates. But if you want to win trophies these are the games you need to win.
