United 4 West Brom 0

United’s performances have been mixed this season, with only a few glimpses of the free and open football that was played pretty much every week last year. Yet the performance at Blackburn was so good that many expected the team to push on from that and find its feet playing stylish and exciting football. At half time against West Brom United seemed to have regressed, and there were many heads in hands feeling almost dismayed by the performance, but then suddenly it all came together.

The first half was there on a plate for United to take. West Brom were organised and decent but offered little up front and did not test VDS once with any real vigour. United had almost all the possession and passed it around the West Brom box very well. But there was little penetration and we rarely needed their keeper to pull off a great save. There were half chances and balls pinging around the box but not enough to ensure we got on the score sheet. Rooney was unlucky- firstly with his disallowed goal and then with a header that was pushed away- but overall it just was not good enough.

In the second half things clicked into place. Fletcher had dominated the midfield all game but now had support around him to become more creative too. Rooney had been immense all game but now suddenly was finding the ball in better positions and with movement around him. Berbatov had been reasonably quiet but one stunning pass later to Rooney and we were 1-0 up. Old Trafford erupted for the first time all afternoon and the relief was visible all around. The goal changed the game and goals soon followed from Ronaldo, Berbatov and Nani. It could have been 10.

The game was slightly worrying despite the scoreline, mainly because the team began so sluggishly and also because the atmosphere was so flat. Yes we were missing Scholes, Hargreaves, Carrick, Anderson and Tevez but the players out there could have been sharper in the first half and headed into the Celtic game with a strong performance. However, a win is a win and it is another clean sheet for Rio and co to be proud off. And ultimately the link up between the forwards was awesome in the last half hour and gives us even more hope that Rooney, Berbatov, Ronaldo and co can all complement each other’s games.
