United 4 Arsenal 0

Other posts have been made below this one about the dramatic way in which United swept Arsenal aside in the FA Cup. But it cannot be emphasised enough just how up for this game United were and how the team beat Arsenal to virtually every loose ball or won almost every tackle. It was a tremendous performance that could possibly have a psychological impact in terms of the league, although only time will tell if United are able to overhall the 5 point gap.

The biggest negative of the day was that United only scored four. It was more of a one sided game than the famous 6-1 of a fw years back, and I cannot remember a team performing as badly at Old Trafford in a long time- even Derby and Fulham put more of a fight up this season in Manchester. United wasted chances for fun at times and the finishing was far from emphatic- it maybe could have been six or seven. But that is not something to complain about, this was a day full of positives.

We all know it is a squad game these days and United had put up all week with Arsenal complaining about injuries. But when it came down to it they put virtually a full side out, where as United opted for leaving out Ronaldo, Tevez, Giggs and Scholes not to mention Gary Neville missing too. In short, we put out half of our full team and even threw in players short of match practice such as Park and Fletcher. But that was not a problem- Arsenal were just no match for the drive in midfield from Anderson and Fletcher, the power and workrate of Rooney up front and the tricks and skills of Nani who tore them apart. Van der Saar did not have a save to make and the petulance of Arsenal started to emerge.

In the crowd there wasa buoyant atmosphere and the 9000 away fans stayed quiet from the moment the first goal hit the net. This was the performance everyone had wanted to see against City and it sparked a wave of songs in memory of the Babes. The result cannot make up for the disappointment and embarrassment of the week before, and nor can it help overhaul Arsenal’s lead at the top of the league table, but it was still a very enjoyable day out and a great pefformance to restore United’s confidence.
