Liverpool v Man Utd preview

United travel to Anfield for the lunchtime kickoff on Sunday with both sides hoping to pick up the three points. Fergie has the better record over Benitez, having picked up five wins and one draw in the Premiership over the Liverpool manager but form will no doubt go out the window.

Date: Sunday 16th December 2007

It looks like Xabi Alonso has recovered from his metatarsal injury and will be in the Liverpool squad for the first time in two months whilst Javier Mascherano is also fit despite a knock midweek.

However, Steve Finnan is unlikely to be fit due to a calf problem.

Fergie’s only concern is John O’Shea which will be great news for Liverpool after conceeding the last minute goal to the Irishman last season but is only a minor doubt and is likely to make the bench.

Owen Hargreaves has also recovered from a calf injury and is likely to play a crucial part in protecting the back line from Steven Gerrard’s surging runs into the box.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
“We both look upon the other as our main rival. You have to be a man to handle that atmosphere. If you are a lamb, you are dead.

“No matter what position the clubs are in this game is separate from anything.

“It encapsulates everything in British football: the passion, the fervour of the fans, the ability of the players.”
