United beat Birmingham 1-0 in good away win

United went in to this game with confidence higher than before. The defeat to Coventry would have little baring and wins against Lisbon and Chelsea saw better play and more attacking zest than the dire performances before them. However, it would still be a tough game against an organised team who came away from Anfield with a draw, especially with us struggling to break teams down with much conviction.

The atmosphere in the away end was amazing and intense. A late kick off meant a day of drinking for most, with thousands piling in just before kick off and setting the ground alight with noise. The Birmingham fans were no match for it at all, perhaps the novelty of being a Premiership club has worn off or perhaps the £45 ticket prices made their mark. Either way, 3 sides of the stadium were almost silent and there were gaps of empty seats. Perhaps the Zulu army fancied an early night instead.

As the game kicked off the away fans noticed a rather large woman in the home section and decided she would be a target of abuse. A barrage of songs destroyed the poor woman who ended up standing and dancing sending the whole United end into howls of laughter. A fellow overweight Birmingham fan got annoyed, lost the plot, and got himself arrested, later to be dragged out kicking and screaming. The woman in question was baited throughout the game, especially when we had the lead.

On the pitch United looked woeful. Birmingham were impressive and attacked us far more than I expected. With effort and work rate like that Birmingham should stay up this season. Luckily, and it was lucky at times, United hung on yet offered little at the other end. At half time we joked they were saving the goals for our end, and shortly after half time the game turned. Ronaldo’s individual run and finish, reminiscent of last season, won the game and took the 3 points back to Old Trafford. And after the goal the performance was far better. The game could easily have finished 2 or 3 nil in the end, but the one will do, especially with another clean sheet and with Chelsea slipping up. Again.

On 606 United’s fans typically called in moaning about the performance. But Ronaldo summed it up on TV, saying results were far more important than attacking displays at this stage of the season. That will come with confidence and with the match fitness of Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez improving. We also have the return of Hargreaves to look forward to and, with such a solid defensive unit, things are not all that bad. 5 wins on the trot in the league without a goal conceded is not all that bad is it?! Chelsea wish that was the worst of their problems.
