Rooney Fractures Foot

When you finish a game with John’OShea up front, you know something’s wrong.

United have one of the strongest squads in years but many fans have voiced their concerns that we’ve got a genuine lack of quality fit strikers to start the season with and if anything was to happen to Wayne Rooney then we’d have a problem.

Well guess what? In the first half of the first game of the season, Rooney goes down after a challenge from Reading’s Michael Duberry and is subbed at half time. After going for a scan it’s revealed that he’s fractured his foot meaning he’ll probably be out for at least as long as he was when he suffered his metatarsal injury two seasons ago.

With Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still unfit and Alan Smith being sold to Newcastle, we’ve got a serious problem with who we’re going to field for the next few weeks.

Fortunately the Carlos Tevez transfer went through on Friday so he’s now available for selection, but despite playing in the Copa America, it remains to be seen how fit he’ll be and was probably left out of the squad for the Reading game due to fitness worries.

So despite having the likes of Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs and now Nani and Anderson, we could be looking at the first few weeks of the season without a great deal of depth in the attacking department.
