Stoke 0 United 2

I missed the game at Stoke last season as my ankle was in a case following surgery, so I was looking forward to going to the Britannia and judging their probably overhyped atmosphere for myself. I had been before when United has played a pre-season game there years ago, but all I remember of that was being stuck in traffic, our team being hammered and Forlan scoring a late consolation! We got to the ground at around 12.30pm after all the stories of how hard parking would be. It turned out that it was pretty easy to find a spot, but that there was nothing nearby to help us kill the hours unless we wanted to look at used cars. Instead we headed over to the away end to see who was around, and saw the team bus (including Owen Hargreaves on board) pulling up next to us. Fed up of the wind, and lack of reds around, we went into the stadium at around 1.45pm to find our seats, which were low down directly behind the goal. Read more

United 4 City 3

I cannot remember a more over-hyped derby day for many years, and the tension in the air was apparent for anyone within then near vicinity of
Manchester. The ridiculous posters City put up around the city and the comments of Hughes and Tevez ahead of the game had all stoked up the fire further, not exactly then quelled by Ferguson either. Besiktas 0 United 1

I always remember watching reaction to the 1995 Champions League draws where United were matches with Galatassaray for the second year running. Fergie looked straight down the camera and said “We’re going back to hell!”. 14 years on and there I was deciding whether to book flights to Istanbul at great expense, which ultimately I did. The Besiktas fans don’t have the same psychotic reputation as their close neighbours from the Ali Sami Yen, but we knew it would not all be fun whilst there, especially when United’s advice to travelling supporters read: “The seats allocated to United fans are in a corner of the stadium and many of the seats suffer severe sight-line restrictions due to Perspex sheeting running from the top to the bottom of the sector. It is also fair to say that the seats themselves are not what United fans are used to. There is one male and one female toilet at the top corner of the sector. The toilets are clean but the WCs do not contain a porcelain bowl and are more of a traditional Turkish style.” Read more

Spurs 1 United 3

Spurs were top of the league and flying, a team built on confidence with players like Defoe and Lennon at the top of their games. United were stumbling, looking average and grinding out results. It was set to be an epic tussle and turned out to be one of the most exciting and enthralling games I have seen in years. Just like the Arsenal match two weeks ago plenty of Reds outside the ground were saying they would take a draw, but sitting alongside them in the sunshine pre-match I disagreed. Read more
