With the league sown up we went off to Rome with high expectations. United are world beaters, can take on anyone on their day and fans flocked to Italy to see what promised to be a great spectacle. For the last two years I have been unable to really enjoy a game of football. It has been so tense with so much at stake, and seemingly every trophy we win goes right to the wire. They are a club with many problems, we had already dumped them out of Europe and now they had to watch us win the title- great stuff Arsenal. But today was not about them, it was about United and in many ways Liverpool too. You can just imagine merseyside watching with fingers crossed pinning all their hopes on a late Arsenal goal, but it never came in such a dismal game and that moment when the final whistle sounded was just fantastic. Derby games are always strange and unpredictable. Last season City caused two shocks by doing the double over us and this year their form is so patchy that no one knew how they would do at Old Trafford. Fortunately their players seemed to forget everything derby matches are about and feel flat at Old Trafford to allow us to do the double over them as revenge for last season. With so many games over the last month and the pressure of the title run in, no one envisaged this being such a gentle stroll for the Reds.
“We’re on the march of Fergie’s army, and we’re NOT going to Wem-ber-ley, we are going to Rome instead, to dress the Pope in red, cos United are the greatest football team” was the cry before kick off in the Drayton Arms pub, in the shadow of the Emirates Stadium. Reds lined the pavement in the sunshine surrounded by police horses, confident of an away victory and of going to Italy later this month. Inside the ground the away end was filling too, and we made our way in at around 7.15pm to check the teams and get ready for what we thought would be an epic battle that would just about swing one way or another.
