Season preview

It is less than two weeks until United and Chelsea walk out the tunnel at Wembley to kick off the new season, and rarely have things been so focused on off the field activity. The press seem to have become Hollywood celebrity experts camping out in LA to catch a glimpse of a former Red, or polishing up their legal skills to report on sagas including those surrounding Heinze and Tevez. A dodgy Thai has moved in at City, Liverpool think money should be spent on even more over-rated Spanish strikers (as if Luis Garcia and Morientes were not enough), Leeds are embroiled in a row over tax dodging and loan repayments, Arsenal are losing players by the second and Chelsea are fighting to hang on to Robben whilst also bringing in some useful additions. Glazers Buy Now, Pay Later

There was a large number of fans including myself apposed to Malcolm Glazer’s takeover of the club. The club was the most profitable football club in the world, winning trophies and signing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney but was about to be plunged into £660m worth of debt, ticket prices were going to rise and efforts were going to be made throughout the club in order to cut costs so that the Glazers could repay this debt.

However, after a season where United played some of the best football they have for years, won the Premiership title and then gone out and spent £70m on new players, was the hype and warnings an over-reaction? Read more
